Hello informatic students!! Welcome to the Master's in Informatics!! Cathy Fant and myself want you to be connected with each other so you can collaborate and learn from each other. We created this site for our students that are sometimes alone in a class or in a small class. The informatics curriculum was designed to share and collaborate with other students. This is an important part of learning. Feel free to interact and ask each other questions and share ideas. Cathy and I can participate in the blog or stay out and let the two of you use it. It is up to you.

Hello professors and other informatic student. looking forward to communicating
ReplyDeleteDQ 1. "Evaluating information systems in nursing" is an article that discusses how patient care can be benefitted by the information that is available to health care providers regarding each patient. "Information technology offers tremendous opportunities to enhance clinical practice and appropriateness of care and to increase efficiency and effectiveness in healthcare organizations. IT can help to provide a structured way to access and interpret patient data and, at the same time, provide a variety of information resources to increase the level of knowledge of the nurse decision maker", (Oroviogoicoechea, 2006, p 567). The author discusses how nurses feel that IT may take away from the personal relationship between healthcare workers and patients, however that increased teaching and involvement of nursing in the implantation of IT will better help the healthcare team and patients, (Oroviogoicoechea, pp 567-575).

DQ 2. The wireless devices that are used include computers, laptops and PDA's. "A PDA provides an address book, a calculator, date book, memo pad, (for typed input), notepad (for written input), to do lists and a way to synchronize part or all of this information with another computer, to help the user organize their time and tasks", (Saba & McCormack, 2006, p158). The PDA allows the individual to have a small and portable information system. "The advantages for healthcare providers using the standard PDA functions include saving time through improved access to and management of information", (Saba & McCormack, 2006). "The attractiveness of PDA's for nurses and other healthcare providers lies in the ability to customize the PDA's usefulness by applications specifically developed to assist healthcare providers in the clinical setting", (Saba & McCormack, 2006).

Professor, both my kids have the verizon droids which gives them everything including the weather updates which I hear about all day. I know they have very many app choices, email and internet at their fingertips. My husband uses a blackberry which I believe is forever stuck to his fingertips. "Smartphones would allow healthcare professionals such as nurses to input clinical data into patient records. Although smartphones would not be universally applicable for all nurses, they may prove to be particularly useful for the collection of some pertinant data such as vital signs and fluid data", (Putzer & Park, 2010).

Hello Kezia, very nice to meet you.
ReplyDeleteI look forward to all the posts. I hope you will have the time to share between the classes. I realize you all have many demands for your time. It should be a good forum to chat.

Kezia, I have just started using simulation, there is so much to learn. I have discovered that i do love working with computer technology but there is so much to learn.
ReplyDelete"Digital health record allows information to be recorded over time. If a patient takes his/her weight and blood pressure daily, most software will graphically display this data over time so that subtle trends can be observed. This type of trend data is much more useful in identifying emerging or developing conditions than snap shot data that is collected every 6-8 weeks at a physicians office", (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2009, p 268-269).

DQ 2. DQ2. Common terminologies allow healthcare workers to understand each other. Many of us have words that mean different things to different people. "It presents, in the form of an international technical standard, a means of ensuring consistency among the plethora of contemporary standardized nursing terminologies, with a view to harmonization and possible convergence. It provides a rationale for the shared development of models of terminology use; models that embody both clinical and pragmatic knowledge in order to ensure that contemporary nursing records systems reflect the best available evidence and fit comfortably with routine practice", (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2009, p 98).

Hello
ReplyDeleteHello
ReplyDeleteI am looking forward to having this blog facilitate communication between all the NI students, especially since there are so few students in each class. So much is happening in informatics and I look forward to the sharing.

Hi, I am Raquel Brown. I currently work on a medical-surgical/telemetry unit; but have experience in a variety of settings including critical care, NICU, and clinical education. I enjoy teaching, but because by background is mainly clinical I thought of evaluating CPOE. However after reading Kezia's post I thought, new staff orientation. That is something that has been nudging me since I started working at this facility, but I have been passive. Perhaps now is the time to challenge my skills.
ReplyDeleteRaquel, Informatics is a wide open field and your critical care experience will be a tremendous asset to this degree. MAT
